I've seen glides in a lot of drag cars...even the ford guys use them (not gonna tell my opinion on why )

If you build the glide right it would be the best because it takes a lot of the human error factor out of the equation...

I'm also going to agree with the gear comment...for the 1/8th get as much mechanical advantage as you can.
