Unhappy THM400 Tanny problem WON'T SHIFT OUT OF 2nd??? please help!

We are not able to shift out of 2nd gear, it has a saturday night special torque converter and most likely a shift kit, is there anything we can do or check on for this problem? Should we replace the converter or the whole tranny???
any help will be greatly appreciated
    thanx

This is a long-shot, but try jacking the car up onto jackstands, and run the car in reverse. I had the same problem with my old Mach 1, and after getting no good advice, a bodyman of all things suggested this, and said it will backflush the valve body. I tried it and it worked. Go figure.

Probally the governer sticking, make sure ya got vacume to the modulator, if thats o.k. check the passing gear linkage for binding and adjustment if thats o.k. then go after the governer, pull the cover on the tail shaft, pull the governer out and clean it up, make sure the flyweights on it do not bind if o.k. reinstall it and try the thing again........

most all of what everybody said is good advice GASSER 1955 about the gov. sticking, the vacuum to the modulator, the modulator and valve being free, but on the 400 there is on passing gear linkage. its and electric switch in the trans that works off of a switch on the carb. or under the dash on some models. but if it goes bad it wont shift into any gear most of the time. will it back-up ok and is low gear ok? hope this helps.
