From your description, I take it your current spring is mounted on top of the axle housing? If so, you can get a setup from Speedway that mounts behind and below the axle as you mentioned. The only drawback is that you will have to move your spring mount on the frame back about 6 inches or end up with a shorter wheelbase.
Is this what you have in mind?
