Thread: what rear end do i use for a 48 chev

I'm rebuilding a 1948 chevy stylemaster. I oplan on putting a 283 up front with mustang II suspension under. I have had trouble finding a rear end that will fit, with out narrowing the axels. Anybody have any ideas?

the driveshaft is enclosed and floats in the same oil as the gearbox. the last time i had the tranny out i had to remove the leaf spring bolts, and roll the rear end back to repair clutch. I am not sure what the width od the rear end is, because the car is in storage in Texas. I have been getting the parts together, and building the engine in my shop.

I have uploaded some pictures of my car, And as anyone can see there is a ton more work to do..I just had to stop the rust...When I get the car to my new house I'm gonna tear it all the way down...I can't wait.
This car was my Grandfather's before he died and I want to make him proud . I have loved this car eversince I drove it when I was 5 years old.

Have you looked at a nova or camaro?

55-57 Chevy should be close...which is about the same as a Nova/Camaro too.

The track width on most of the older cars is around 56 1/2" (center of the tire tread on one side to the center of the tire tread on the other side.) If you want to use a 9" Ford, look at some of the late 70's, early 80's Ford Broncos. Measure ones with stock wheels so you don't get sidelined by aftermarket wheels which may have a different backset.
