Never saw anything like this, I just wonder how the spring is fastened to the axle? Wouldn't there be a lot of torque on the radius rod batwings if the spring was shackled to the axle?

Can't tell how the spring is attached to the axle. However, if it's connected correctly, it would work fine without binding. Connect the spring to a short shackle, then connect the other end of the shackle to the axle. That gives enough degrees of freedom to eliminate bind.
