If your front axle is square to the frame, all you need to do is measure from the back of the front to the front of the rear. It doesn't make any difference what it measures as long as it is the same on both sides.

You can measure from the center of your Trans Cross-member,measure to each axle tube till thay are equle then your dead nuts ,I like to keep it simple other methods are fine if you know for certian the front end is in good alinement.set the rear up off the front then get an alinement and you may be off a bit,but like I said it helps if you no vehicle history when using any method.
