Model A high boy rear end

Hi how wide should a rear end be to fit close to a A body and not look to wide (to far away from body)
I am buying a coupe but it looks like the 10 bolt is to wide in the pic of it.
    Thanks Dave

I just bought my brother's basket case 29 a roadster original body, just missing deck lid, lots of parts in boxes It has a 8 inch maverick 5 bolt that looks right. Engine will be stock 302 4 barrel dual exhaust. I should only be in it 10g or less when it is finished.

My '29 five window also has an 8" posi from a Maverick and it is perfect width. I believe the Ford "9 rear ends are about 1 1/2" wider and would have to be modified to look right.

The usual width for rear ends on higboys et al is 56".

Measured from outer drum to outer drum which is the accepted way to measure.

    Fwiw - I'm running a 55" wide 9" under a 32 highboy.
It runs 10" wide wheels with 285/70R-15 tires.
The four bars are between frame and tire, things are close, but there's never been any rubbing.
    Backspace is 2 7/8".

    I have a 31 A on 32 rails project roadster that's running a 56" wide 9".
This axle places the 6" wide 15" wheels under the bobbed fenders just right.
    Backspace is 3".
    Tires are 235/80R-15.

    I meant to add, the 57 Ford 9" rear - and a lot of the 8" rears - is 57 1/2" wide.

They work well under the early cars . . . provided you can find one.
You're only gaining 3/4" per side as compared to the accepted standard of 56" wide.

If you should be so lucky, try to find a 57 rear axle from a station wagon or Ranchero.
Many of these - depending on the engine - had 31 spline axles althought the 28 spline axles work well on the street when running an open diff.
