    It it stainless steel I usually start out w/ 80 git if theres any deep scratches then move to a 320 to smooth it out then to a 400 to a 600 by this time I use ether a 800 or 1000 grit to polish this is done with a d/a sander then come the fun part and if your arms aren't hanging to the floor. Then i used a high speed buffer with a good metal( polish-cleaner ) then use some mother polish .it a lot of work but it is worth itthis also work for aluminum or any soft metal crome is plate and as drg84 has stated good crome polish
