getting a title in california

Since January 2004 california's new law forces any unregistered vehicle that has fallen off the books to become registered as 2005 that is subject to all the laws that a 2005 vehicle is subject to. Of course this is unexceptable and I'm hoping someone on this forum has found a way around this situation. I have a 1950 Ford F1 pickup that has VIN tag and and black and yellow plates. One of the reasons I purchased this vehicle was becuase the seller assured me he had a pink slip. What he mailed me was an application for duplicate pink. That's when I went to DMV and found out what this new law is. Any assistance anyone has will be greatly appreciated, otherwise I will be forced to make the seller take the truck back and I would rather keep it. But if I can't register it then I can't use it. HELP

a small town dmv they will probably register
it as smog excempt. :D

But what if they don't? Then I'm really up shit crick without a paddle.......I used to have a 57 Bel Air just like that. Was the first frmae off I did years ago. My ex's father still has the son of a bitch. I loved that car, should never have let him have it. Thanks for the input

if they don't they have to tell you how then you

I already went to the dmv and they would not register it as anything but a 2005. they told me themselves that the new law would require that I have to have safty bumbers, cat converters, drivers side airbag etc etc. I don't know when the last time you went to DMV without a pink and it had fallen off the books was but that's how it is now. They are actually trying to get all the old cars off the streets. It sucks

vin and it shows it was registered at any time then there
would be no problem,if there is a problem with your dmv
call another get one that is on your side.

Kevin do what I did when I lived in Barstow. I got a PO box in Vegas so I could title my camaro there to keep the tinted windows, and it wouldn't pass the Cali safety inspection. That is if you can't get around it the other way. Then once its titled there you should be able to transfer it over to cali as you will have a title.

That's another idea, I jsu don't know if I am willing to go to those kind of lengths. If it's to much hassle I'll just make the seller take it back.

How do you make a seller take it back? I never take back anything I sell unless it's traded for something more expensive.
You could drag him in to court but you would probably lose. It depends on what's written on the bill of sale not what he said before you paid him.
Check out www.broadwaytitle.com They say they can get you a title in 6 to 10 days.

OOPS! I just looked at their website and it says they can't do California cars. So registering it yourself in another state may be your only option.

I just had a friend in Harbor City that reg a 60 Rambler he brought in from Co. with no plates and all they made him do was bring the car down so they could check the vin...... he didn't need to show smog or insurance and they gave him the plates this was about 2 or 3 months ago
I say find another DMV........ most the time if you ask 6 different DMV employes a qusetion you'll get at least 5 1/2 different answers sometimes maybe 7 :LOL:

There is a guy in the back of "Rod & Custom" with an ad that reads, "Vintage titles, buy sell trade. I'm gonna give hima shot. I called yesterday but missed their call back.
As for making the guy take it back. We work at the same place and there are a lot of dealings that take place there. He wonm't want the word to get around that he's a dirty dealer. Of course there are other manners of persuasion besides the courts. He'll either pay for then apaerwork that I have to procure or he WILL take it back. Those will be his only choices.
