Sorry man, i wasnt very good at math. FMX, have fun!
I ran this through the translator
Chevy's Rule
and it gave me this
Fords Are Number One!
I guess the translator is better than I thought:LOL:
Screamer, i think that your Fords statement is a bit off. Nope, Wait, Waaay off! :P
Yeah, what you mean't to say is Chevy's rule, Fords are number one on the shit list! Haha.
Chevy's have their place - as boat anchors!
No really, I got this jeep cheap becuase, well, the chevy 305 is banging - if it turns at all. it has oil, just no pressure.
in my garage is a 700R4..junk.
my friends' camaro, the 84 i am getting a replacement 305 from - it has a 305 in it because the factory engine, umm, died.
79 malibu..the v6 died. the 350 replacement died. the 305 replacement for that died.
70 bonneville. 455, died.
88 caddy sdn deville, v8, died.
74 lesabre, 350, died
91 roadmaster, died
the only living chevy i know of (among family and friends) is a 96 corsica, but it has only 40k on it.
72 ltd, 351c, lived
785 ltd, 400m, lived
85 escort, 1.9?, beat to hell and no maintenance, lived
63 ford, 289, run 12 miles with a seized oil pump, lived (used pump installed, drove it for 20k miles more)
74 pinto, 2.0L, snapped timing belt, changed belt, it lived
85 turbo t bird, 4 turbos, 1 engine, 230k living still
93 taurus, 162k, living still
79 lincoln, 400m 95k, lliving still
I don't know of a ford engine to have died amongst my friends and relatives.
Chevy's may be cheaper to work on, but you get what you pay for:eek:
There must be some reason GM is losing market share on new vehicles!
BTW, Ford and Chevy are BOTH better than any import.
and ANY car that isn't running sucks!
I agree.Fords are #1.......in the junk yards.....lol
Well I had to "work" today, I took a Summer job so I could buy a crate moter even though I am retired. I just miss one day and you guys really open up the Ford/Chevy feud! I want to clear up one thing, it was at least a 5 foot pipe on the handle of the Craftsman 3/8" ratchet when it broke, so a 4 foot handle should be OK! Back in 1970 I bought a Dune buggy with an old '60 36 HP VW engine and I started to make it comfortable with a T-top and Big/Little whitewall tires on a gold metalflake body. Pretty soon I realized it needed a better motor BECAUSE the flywheel and the pressure plate just fell off! On the VW flat-4s there is only ONE NUT holding the flywheel and I swore to myself that on the next engine that nut would not come off. That is why I used the pipe. I do not remember whether the recommended torque was 210 ft. lb. or 210 m-kg, but it didn't matter because I did not have a torque wrench that went that high anyway, hence the pipe. Then I took the 3/8" ratchet to Sears, I think it was about 1978 and they did give me a kit to repair the ratchet, so they have been doing that for a long time. The parts were "dry" and easy to install, so I though it was a fair deal. The Ford guys broke my heart when they let the Duntov hemi heads go to Chrysler and then came out with the long water pump and short stroke on the 289. On the other hand what is the word on the street about the new Lightning Ford Pickup, it looks pretty quick to me. I am still looking forward to the best of both worlds with a light Ford roadster and a SBC engine. As far as using a ratchet for a hammer, I would never do that as long as I had a 12" Craftsman adjustable. How can we get this thread back on a rational track? Here's a question, how long will a SBC 383 live with the short rods from the 350, scuffin' along the side of the cylinders? Will it last for street use?
Best Wishes,
Semi-Retired Scientist/teen rodder:) :)
Yeah, I didn't realize this was the tools thread anymore. lol We switched the subject about 10 times already. Ok well back to the subject on tools.....
Ford made tools, incluede thmein the model Ts i think. Most all motorcycles (maybe all?) come with some basic tools inthe kit, although i doubt that many owners would know what to do with them, or that the tools included would fix much.
i used to carrya toolbox in my car(s). they used to need it LOL. My Taurus is the first car i've owned with over 100k miles on it, and it is reliable. low maintenance too.
Damn, that reminds me...I was to change the oil in the Wife's van tonite. and yesterday. well. maybe tomorrow nite...
chris
Just one last note on Chevy-VS-Ford ;) I am a chevy guy by nature but i also have a 66 t-bird i just build for a family member and a 67 stang i'm in the process of building for another family member and i will say this.
I honestly think that the life of the car is 99% dependant on the way the owner takes care of the car with maintance ...nuff said;)
Far as how long the 350 rods will last...forever,its a CHEVY! sorry couldn't resist:3dSMILE:

Motorcycles come with tools? HEY! I Got Ripped! Anyway, Screamer, you have never owned a vehicle over 100K? Wow You suck. Seriously though, you must just be cursed to never own a GM vehicle. You have killed some pretty decent motors there. However, i dont see a Oldsmobile on your list. Always good. Maybe if you owned some tools, you would be able to keep a GM running!:LOL::LOL:
Haaaaaaaahaha, but yeah about a motorcycle with tools.... some do come with them and others like dirt bikes and all don't. Talking about motorcycles.... some black dude a few weeks ago had some cruiser/street bike at the local gas station and he was trying to fix it because it was backfiring really loud and all and he was messing with the carb like he knew what he was doing and I was like holy shit what a dumb ass. Most likely it was the vavles not opening at the correct time because the cam and all was off timing. Thing was loud, then he just drove it off popping really loud and everyone was looking at him. It was pretty funny. :p Ok back on subject I guess.
Haha, or F'ed over rebuilt Dodge. heh
haaahaha nice one. I got to agree though, some ford's are pretty damn nice looking (the body not engine).
I owned a 74 buick apollo, 86 S10, 89 S10 (that GM bought back as a lemon!). I have also had several chrysler vehicles over the years.Quote:

The list before contained vehicles owne by closefriends and relatives as well - the one friend is great at killling gm cars, but fords live under his ownership - so the maintentance and abuse 'scale' is balanced - he ignores them all.:whacked:
BTW, oldmobile has gone the way of Edsel and DeSoto - the last car rolled off the assembly line in April, an Alero (a real car guy car that one - NOT:LOL: )

Is it just me or did your last statement not make any sense at all? I don't get what you are trying to get at.:confused:Quote:

The Oldsmobile Division of General Motors no longer exists. And about the Alero, Have you ever looked at one? The typical GM jellybean look and the performance of a 70's VW Super Beetle.
Don't get me wrong. I used to like Olds, back when you could get a real Rocket V8 in one. I owned 2 new ones and two used ones in the 70's. The main reason I quit buying them was when They started putting small block Chevys in them. To me, it was no longer an Olds. :( :( :( :(
Regarding a "383" SBC, I was just trying to clarify some information I received from H&M in Richmond. I was kind of turned off when they told me their "383" was subject to more rapid wear on the cylinder sides due to "short rods", yet their advertisement on the Internet says "A 350 engine built with 400 C.I. longer stroke crank and 400 C.I. Connecting Rods" ($1433 with 4-bolt exchange). Thus they ARE selling a 383 although they use a 0.040" overbore which makes the actual displacement a little more than 384 cu. in. However on page 150 of David Vizard's "How to Build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget" a buildup of a 383 in includes a recommendation for SCAT 6" rods. Thus the stock rods are shorter than the SCAT rods, the question is are the longer rods really necessay or just a luxury?
This is the second time they have given me some misleading/conflicting information since they told me a Comp Cam XE250 could not be used with high compression heads due to detonation, while I have learned from Tech1 and the Speed-O-Motive web site that low deck height and/or thin gasket will provide squish/quench to permit higher than 9.0 C.R. That is why I continue to blab on this site so I can get several points of view to compare to make my own judgement based on more than one source. Soooo, is there more cylinder wear in a "383" or is this just hype? Just trying to learn the facts before I lay my green on the counter (soon). I am starting to think I will stay conservative and not depart from the specs for a Corvette 300HP-350 very much.
Since this is the "tools" thread, I found an old open end wrench with Ford script on it in my Dad's tool box but I do not know what car it came from/with, but it does show there were Ford wrenches with some models. Dad owned a Model T and I have seen pictures of tool kits with the Model T; I believe he had a '26 T.

Olds is dead. GM decided to discontinue the brand about 5 years ago..the last car, an alero, rolled on the assembly line in April. Read about that one in car and driver i beleve, the new issue.Quote:

the last bit, was a slam about Olds...if they be so great, how do you explain the Alero - as Oldf100fordman said, performance of an old Superbeetle, but the beetle was more fun to drive
GM, moreso than other companies, is into 'badge engineering' - the new GTO is an example. They bought Saab, now 1/3 of Saabs are subarus, 1/3 will be GM-US cars (trailblazer for one) and 1/3 'true' saab. GM has since about 72 (earlier on some cars) made one chassis and changed the name (badge) and some minor stylling alterations and sold the car under 4 or 5 names.
And lastly, GM makes a Saturn - using a HONDA V6! How could the General have sunk so low.:(

Pinto - Fords answer to the Vega:LOL:
Neither car was exaclty a a world beater, now was it?
but compared to the Gremlin...
Or the MUCH better replacement, the PACER
http://www.amcpacer.com/stories/delo...on-wheels.html
And my pinto, a 74 'sedan' had the external glove box, er trunk the manual called it. My basic 10" wide craftsman toolbox would NOT fit in there!
external glove box:LOL: :3dSMILE:
There is no accounting for taste...

and the trunk...

About the Olds.... I like those 49-52's with chop tops and dropped real low where you can't even see the rear tires.... That is the only Olds I really like.

Some one needs to take you for a ride in stout 442. Then maybe you'll appreciate what Olds was at one time.
Reply to Tech1 regarding 383 rods:
Thank you very much, I get it now. The 400 rods ARE SHORTER and there would be some piston rocking and that probably leads to some scuffing more than with longer rods. Of course whether this is really a difference that would be noticeable in 25,000 miles or not may be debateable. One consideration is that while dragster crews can and must rebuild engines between runs, a street rod/car should last a few years between rebuilds. My apology to H&M, they are correct but how much of a difference it makes may not be known easily. It is great to have Tech1 as a reference source!
To those who find Fix-Or-Repair-Daily a problem I recommend you try to maintain an MG as a daily driver and you will appreciate the FORD better! Over a four year period running an MG daily I not only carried wrenches, I also carried a book with phone numbers of local tow trucks. Admittedly I started from a Midget that had a tree growing up through the floor, but after replacing just about every part except the radiator and the differential, things still needed very frequent repair. Should we talk about Lucas ignition systems? No! Solex side-draft carbs? Interesting toys! MGs are indeed beautiful to look at and the early TC and TD models look a bit like Model A Fords in "cuteness" but they need a LOT of TLC, much more than the FORD maladies, I hope Chevies are as good as some of you say!
Among the flotsum and jetsom on this site, there are some real gems of information and I thank Tech1 for his valuable info; especially as I try to reenter the world of U.S. cars.

What is your fasination with pictures. You can't feel the kick in the seat of your pants with a picure. Yeah I've got old time pictures of the three I owned, but got no way to scan them in.
Pictures will never replace the experience.
I don't have a fasination with pics, I just wan't to see what the one your talking about looks like.
What one? Anyone would do Just as long as it's a real 442 (72 or earlier, not one of the late 70's-early80's tape stripe ones). I am beginning to think it's time for the IGGY button.**) **) **) **)
a 442 from about 73-on was not exactly award winning. However, it still was a 442. But remember, there was 455s after the muscle car era ended in Cutlasses and 442s too. In fact there were 455s in 76. So to those who Naysay the Oldsmobiles of the world, I have this to say....Quote:

Enjoy this car, cause there wont be many left in the world after the ricer invasion!:whacked: :whacked:
This thing doesnt like to post pics all of a sudden? lets see if this works.
That is true. My first muscle car ride was back in 69, in a 69 chevelle 396SS.Quote:

My first built up (not a rod..but built) ride was in the late 70s in a 63 Ford Galaxie with a 390. a beastly thing it was.
One day I may have a fast ride to comparte to the cars of yore...until then, pictures will have to do!

Hey, I tried to keep the subject on tools, but this is an old thread with a lot of "Roddin-at-Random" thrown in. Since then I purchased a neat Dremel kit of a drive motor, flexible coupler and a box of assorted cutting/grinding tips. I have already used it extensively to modify/notch the 3/16" wall frame I got from Brookville. I had to make a notch for the back of the master cylinder and cut off the manual brake bracket to make room for the power brake bracket and while the Dremel cutter is not quite equal to a milling machine, you can make some pretty clean cuts with the thin cutting disks. I have also used the Dremel tool to sharpen other tools. I am looking forward to trying to use the Dremel tool as a router to try and make a relatively simple wooden dash overlay to hold gauges. I should have bought the grinder sooner and tried to do my own intake ports, but I have the heads on the engine now and I just don't want to take the heads off. However I am sure I will find a lot more uses for the Dremel TOOL!

i'm currently a junior mechanic, i started off with craftsman's 256 or some.. tool combination package , I abused it and still am abusing it.. when you work in the shop 6 days of your week some tools definitely need to be snap on... but hey even as a mechanic im still afraid of buying snap on cuz... its way too high budget.. yea do agree that sometimes snap on saves you time and effort but if your only gonna work on your personal car and a few other i'll go with sears. for air power tools...IR (ingersoll Rand) does it all.
