    Sound deadening mat in door placement

     



    My 53 will have the original style door panels on it so most of the inside of the door will be exposed steel. I will be putting hush mat in the doors and was wondering if I should put it on the outside skin or on the inside skin. I thing the inside makes more sense to me, just like to double check.

    You usually take the inner door panel off and place the insulation on the inside. Make sure it does not interfere with the window mechanism. You don't need many mats inside, I put three inside each of my doors ,just enough to take away that tinny sound.

    Sorry after reading my question I worded it badly, it will be on the inside of the door , but I was wondering if it would work as well if I stuck it to the inside of the outer skin or if the inside of the inner skin. There is a lot less stuff to go around on the outer skin.

    My thoughts would be to stick it wherever it's easiest to do so.
    If, as you say, there is less to work around on the inside of the outer skin, put it there.
    But as chopt50wgn says, ensure there's no interference with window winder etc.

    All I can offer is my own experience(s) with Dynamat-I think if you put it on an outside panel you will see some deadening,but not the full effect-the reason I feel this way is that there is a very noticeable difference in the "tone" of the Door after I put it on (it "dulls" the metal sound to a thud)-

    I would put it on the outer skin if at all possible (but on some cars the window mechanism does get in the way)-

    Most vehicles of that era had some form of sound deadening anti drum stuck to the inner side of the door skin. Most was a tar based product that was only approximately 1/8" thick and water proof as one has to think of the water running down the inside of the door when either washing the vehicle or out in the rain.
    I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

    ok, thanks guys, I think from what I understand here is put it on where it fits best. I was just a little worried about road noise with the bare steel door skin on the interior.

    One more question. I have a new factory firewall insulation blanket for the inside, is it worth putting mat behind that or do you think the factor stuff would be sufficient. I am only asking because they don't give them sound mats away and if it is not going to make a difference I just as well not put it on.

    When you run out head to the hardware store and ask for the foil backed window wrap, its only 6" wide but is identical to the dynamat but a little thinner, heck put two layers on and be thicker, and its cheap! i knew when i used dynamat i had seen that on a job site before! Found it on another web site, i quit using dynamat and have saved a ton. best of luck. matt

    i used car insulation this time around. the truck has lizzardskin in and out but we went with this stuff to make dana happy. it is light years ahead of bubble wrap and better than dynamat imo.
