What do you mean they "worked intermittently"? Does the pedal just get hard and it won't stop or does the pedal drop to the floor?
Either scenario is very scary but I think the second would tell you to not drive it until you figure it out... Do you have a vacuum gauge that you can install and monitor the vacuum from the engine? If not, you should! Very helpful tool and can tell you much of the engines internal condition.

The pedal is just really hard. But assist seemed to come back for a moment (not to the floor, just like good power assist) but then back to rock hard. See the pic below. Is the black sphere an assist device? The yellow sticker says, "pedal 10 times with ignition off." Which I did, but didn't perceive a change.

And the hydraulic side:

Is that the proportioning valve with the handle?
