Sounds like grease in the top of the knob & down the shaft is cold. You might take a hair dryer or heat gun on LOW and heat the shifter rod & knob and see if it helps? If so then some light machine oil, helped to flow down where it's needed with some more easy heat might do the trick. Just a thought.
