Could be as simple as all of the hinge points are dry and need to be greased/lubed. If it worked before ya' gotta wonder why it's funky now.....

Not sure what picture viewer you're using, but for many there's an "Edit" mode at the top? Once there click "Resize" and select a medium resolution, or one for e-mail/attachment. It's a common issue, and there's more ways to resize files than Carter had little pills....
