Ford in a Ford

I'm new to posting anything so I hope this will post okay.

I have a 1938 Ford tudor deluxe sedan street rod that has a 1974 351w and a 74 FMX in it.

I rebuilt the 351w and tranny. Am ready to lift the body to check the frame and install a rear sway bar and change colors on body.

It has a MII front end on it . I installed a front sway bar and changed springs so far. It had a coil and a half cut off old springs and had two sets of spacer blocks in them . To make it pass Pa. inspection I changed the springs and did cut one half coil the get the riding height I wanted.

I'm a Chevy man but thought I'd keep the Ford stuff in it. Seems the old Fords all have 350-350's in them.

Do any of you guys have Ford motors in your 1937 to 1940 Fords?

Just wondering. I sure enjoy reading this forum, you guys are tops in my book.

No, but I swapped a 302/C4 into an '83 Mitsubishi pickup and a 429/C6 into a '27 Ford roadster on a lengthened frame (115" wheelbase).....does that count?

Hey Denny, welcome to CHR! Glad you're here, and that you're posting. I can't answer for the '37 to '40's, but for me it's always good to keep some continuity, which here would be Ford in Ford. I can't tell you how many times I've had positive comments on my '33 regarding the choice of running a Ford engine. The guys who've been around appreciate that allegiance. I'd give you a very strong vote to keep the Ford driveline in the '38, and I look forward to some pictures when you have time.

Don't Hemi's belong in Fords?

I'm in the throes of fitting a 460 Ford and 4-speed Toploader into my '37 Ford coupe, it's snug but it's in there, not sure if the radiator will keep it cool and there's not much room for a bigger radiator...
And I'm still running the standard front suspension with disc-brakes fitted.

It has a '58 9" rear on early Fairlane springs (Well I THINK that's what the springs are from!)

Oh, and the car came with 350&Muncie but I parted with them!

Hemi's are pretty much universally acceptable. If you have an old Hemi, it's a nice fit in just about anything just for the look and sound, but Denny has a 351W, and was posing the question of keeping it, or changing to Chevy.

I'm going to put the 351W and FMX back in it. The rear end is out of a 1977 Maverick ( 2.79 to 1). When I drove it before tear down, it seemed to be geared okay for cruising, but, felt like it needed to shift into an overdrive. I'm just used to the newer cars.

Hey, any old car, truck or what ever motors in it is cool stuff with me. I like them all. Yes, Hemi's too.

I may have to get the wife to help me with pictures sometime, I'm not that good with 'putters. I know enough about them to get them to lock up.

Denny, I would say your heading the right way with the 351, I was just joking as I am not brand partial as some, I mean my latest is Chrysler powered, with a chevrolet transmission and a Ford rearend so I will roll with whatever, however a Sohc motor or a Ardun flatty or even a Kaase Boss does make me stop and think.....maybe I would be more brand loyal!

Although my car LOOKS like a 1934 Ford, the state of Texas classifies it as a 2007 ASVE*. Since I couldn't find an ASVE motor anywhere, I put in a Chevy ZZ-430 clone. :D ;)

I have a ford 460 in a 48 F1 Ford truck. Wish I'd started with a 5 litre Ford, but the 460 was fun !

Yeah, and a darn awesome well proportioned T Bucket with a Chevy in it too. Interesting how I enjoy winding up some of those who are strict Fords in Fords but when I was building my Anglia I was looking out for a Ford Windsor engine for it but when I came across the 350 Chevy going for a song due to a messy divorce, I was in, and I can't sing. Before that I had always had Fords in Fords. My T Roadster came with a 350 Chevy so is staying that way.

Hi, If the FMX gives you trouble, put at least a C-6 in. Some of the old FMX's run better than people give them credit. Good Luck.

I agree, the FMX is highly under-rated by folks. Rebuild it and it should run for another 40 years.

You can do the rebuild yourself.. it's pretty easy actually.

I figure if the FMX can pulling a 74 full size Ford around, it can handle 38 tudor.

It had a dual vac. modulator on it, but I put a single modulator on. I think the other vac. port has something to do with the egr valve. It's been 25 or 30 years since I rebuilt an automatic.

You guys have some nice rides and projects.

It's been way to many years but.. I "think" the other vacuum port aids in the downshift/upshift points when decelerating. I'd have to go do some research and verify that.. but I think that was the purpose.. I haven't touched a FMX since the mid 80's! LOL..

Randyr still has a SBF in his 37 I believe. My 40 Tudor had a typical SBC/TH400. I was going to go with a ford power plant, but decided to go Hemi. Now it is powered by nothing. Haha I have had thoughts to going to a 390 or 460 ford, but I decided to just keep what I have since I have 80% most of what I need to get it at least running and driving. It's in the project list. Hopefully this winter is the winter of the 40. :LOL: Besides, I can't keep anything brand specific. Everything I have has a dodge engine in it if you want to get down to the OEM branding. :toocool:

One of the issues with a SBF swap is length you can shorten things up check this out,scroll down to post#5 sbf/short water pump/pulleys | The H.A.M.B.

Hey Denny, I don't know how I missed this thread but since I've been referenced by 40Deluxe, I should probably chime in.:D I have a '37 tudor humpback that my dad & I built when I was in college. We went Ford in a Ford from the beginning using a 302/C4/9"rear ('57 Ford). It was a challenge to shoehorn everything in there but we did it. I didn't say it was pretty, but it was very functional. A few years ago I began another rebuild of the car. I kept the 302 (now warmed up a bit) but switched to 3 pedals with a T5 stick. While at it, I put in a recessed firewall, new floors, etc....one thing always leads to 1000 more! Ha! Anyway, hopefully, I'll get it finished one of these days!:LOL::LOL:
If money was no object, I think I would consider selling the 302/T5 and squeeze the new Coyote 5.0/6speed in there. I think that would be great fun!!
