Transmiaaion Identification Help
What is the best way to identify my automatic transmission on the 289 in the Fairlane? With my limited eye sight and physically ability about the best I can do is to run her up on the ramps and snap some pics. Any ideas or suggestions?

hard to find a shop that will mess with it but I sure need it serviced and thought it would be nice if I knew what I had LOL

back in those days there were some that had a D1 and D2 detent--------but you can identify from pan shape and bolt pattern--you ll have to search or maybe if you post pic I can tell you what it is------

And Mello, correct me if I've got it wrong. But my memory says that in 1962, that shouldn't be a 289 but a 260.. unless it's a swap...??..??

If the case is cast iron, it's a Cruise-o-matic. Also an FM, basically the same trans. And yeah, it should be a 260 or a 221.

Thanks for the link, Mike, and "yes" it has been swapped and not the stock 260. Now that I have all this info I need to get her up on the ramps and start comparing.

OK, it quit raining, gorgeous weather and she's up on the ramps. Took some pics and counted the pan bolts that seem to number 13. The pan appears to be square and it sure looks like a bell housing to me. Would Y'all take a look at these pics while I compare them to the ones on Mike's link and see what we can come up with? Sorry that the pics aren't more professional but I did good to get my old bod under there and even hold the camera still.

OK, after looking at Mike's link, I'm coming up with a C-4. Now, could that also be a Cruise-O-Matic or are they two entirely different transmissions?.
