I think I am thinking along the same lines as Jerry; a posi that is acting up, or a locker, could cause the symptoms you describe - heck, even a messed up side gear or spider gear could do it I suppose in an open differential. Since it only occurs when turning left, I would look at the rear end rather than the transmission; if it was the tranny, it should be happening all the time, regardless of the direction.
