I've worked on and driven some 63-72 Vettes with nasty BBC's and side pipes, and that is something you don't want to drive on a long haul without a good set of ear plugs. I was guessing it may not be a whole lot different 3-4 feet farther forward.

At 3 or 4 feet further forward, I would imagine the noise into the car would be worse!

True. I have a couple of friends that have headers with baffles that dump at the lower cowl area. One car is straight back, and one is down. They both claim they're so nice to drive. I think they're full of it just due to the nature of them.
