You showed everything but what I needed to see!!!! Look on the bottom bolts where the center section bolts into the housing... If you can get a socket on the bottom 2 bolts it's and 8" Ford, if only a wrech will fit, it's a 9" Ford.....

With seeing that cast nose on the pinion support it makes me think it might be an 8". But like Dave said, you need to look at those 2 lower studs on the housing. Every time I found an 8" I'd get excited. Oh wow, a 9" with a nodular case! Oh wait, it's only a 8". Haha

Sorry guys, it's neither an 8 or 9 incher. It's that odd ball 9-3/8 that Ford used on some pick ups and cars with 429/460s and Lincolns

See the very first photo here: Kevinstang's Ford Nine Inch Differential Page +

Supposedly a 9" center section will fit though never tried it.

(The guys at Hotrodders.com didn't know either)

If it is the 9 3/8", they do fit into the standard 9" housing, might have to grind a bit on the housing for the ring gear to clear, but that's about it.

I think all you have to do is grind a relief the gasket flange of a 9" housing to fit a 9-3/8 ring gear(or so I've been told) I also think the 9-3/8 are all 31 spline, but, again, don't know from experience, only hearsay.

My recollection is that most of the 9-3/8 gear ratios 'suck', i.e. 2.56/2.69 or thereabouts. Great for prairie cruising/economy behind a C6 in your 429/460 powered Town Car or Thunderbird but not much for performance

I found a good use for one of the center sections, anyway... It's the one I use for mockup on builds, and when I narrow housings!!!! The aftermarket now has some very good ratio's in 9.5" ring gears, but they're made for aftermarket center sections. They are a bit stronger when you start getting into the 1,000 + horsepower builds, might be a consideration. But yeah, the factory 9 3/8" certainly isn't anything to write home about, especially with all the good parts available for a reasonable price thru the aftermarket suppliers...

i was under the impression that it was a 9" rear
the 3.00 gear i put in it was for a 9 incher.
when i asked what is it called
i assumed there was some odd name mechanics used for variations on the 9 inch rear theme
a hot rod is whatever i decide it is.
