ANY overly loud exhaust on a prolonged trip,(like your going to a show out of town)the physical aspect is it will tire you out faster. And mufflers placed towards the rear has a less noise effect inside the car.The burn factor is like owning a dog that bites people. It's property.Therefor you are liable.

Yep, and I've said that every time I pull into a place where people are going to be looking at the car, or especially any time that there are small kids around I'm like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, worrying that someone's going to get burned and that I'm going to feel somewhat responsible, even if they should know better. The lake style pipes are a "defining feature" of my car, but they get hot enough to sizzle skin in ten to twenty seconds, and they will stay hot enough for a second to third degree burn for 15 to 20 minutes. We don't start the car when the grandkids are wandering around, or if they are going for a ride there is always an adult to "help" them in & out. I caution my wife on each exit to "...watch the pipes" (she loves being treated like a kid that way ), and mine are up 15" and end just before the door - a huge difference from side pipes that run beneath the door opening on a car with suicide doors. Even with all that "caution" it's just a matter time before someone cooks a leg, or worse. I think what bothered me most about your "...I'll be extree careful" statement is that it seemed (to me) to be quite arrogant, as if you're above caring what happens to anyone else. That may not be the case, and regardless I'll avoid any further comment on your thread from this point forward. You'll do what you want to do, as you should - it's your car. I believe that all of the collective comments about the inherent dangers were offered to ensure that you were considering the negatives before removing a perfectly good exhaust system that you paid good money for.Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

I'm 100% with Roger on this and can relate to the feeling of responsibility of anybody getting burnt on my exhaust. Whenever I have my T out in public and I know the exhaust are hot, I stand around my car until I can safely run the back of my hand over a header pipe and that way I know that if some kid or an adult who knows no better gets to close, they will not end up with a burn. I learnt this by watching a kid prop his rubber soled jandal up on the side pipe and it melted onto the pipe. What a curse to get off without damaging the chrome. As for the noise we have a police force that would just love to hound the hell out of a person using a car with excessive noise and if one gets caught too many times they, the police, can impound your car, and if the owner still pushes the boundaries, the car can be crushed.I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

I liked Your post Rodger and when I said I'll be extra careful,I didn't mean it as joke,,I of course "do" care about the safety of myself and others,so if and when I do add the pipes,,,I do plan on reminding myself and others,{passengers and outsiders} of the heat issue to the point that I am seriously thinking of putting a sign on My dashboard "reminding" me to "exit carefully"!
I do appreciate Your concern and that's no lie,

" As for the noise we have a police force that would just love to hound the hell out of a person using a car with excessive noise and if one gets caught too many times they, the police, can impound your car, and if the owner still pushes the boundaries, the car can be crushed."
Just another GREAT reason to be living and driving in America. The nannies have not yet taken over. Long live side pipes.
Had a 66 vet BB with side pipes, I have had side pipes on this car 10 years plus, no burns. It's a 34 that means suicide doors. If you place your leg against the door jam getting in and out, or are short I guess you could get burned. I have burned my forearms on the header part, timing, changing plugs, never a leg on the side pipes. That bad32 with side pipes will be Killer32.
I have zero problem with Lake pipes. But for a fact they are much higher on the side of the car and if there were an exhaust configuration to be cautious of that is it. Side pipes at least are low and out of the way.I have two brains, one is lost and the other is out looking for it

If you want side pipes, so be it. But I would store the exhaust parts you will be removing. You may want to go back to them some day.

Not being cruel or insulting, but there are a lot of things that old folks do not know crap about. Just because one is old does not automatically make em smart. I learn new stuff everyday and pretty sure I will ever have the opinion of myself that I am old and now I am smart.
Everyone has different experiences in life, some burn their legs on side pipe and others do not. Just getting out of bed places you in dangers path. So the question then becomes how do you choose to live your life boring in your room or out and about and a bit edgy.
Judge Judy would more the likely ask the kid why are you touching something that does not belong to you without their permission.
Kind regards,I have two brains, one is lost and the other is out looking for it

Age is certainly no guarantee of wisdom!!!! Experience is always the best teacher. I know some younger types that have done all kinds of go fast and Hot Rod type adventures, and some older types who have never done anything themselves, but think because of their age they must be smart..... I'll take the experience anyday!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Well "some of us are smart" enough to know when to let it go.
You "learn" on sites like this one you really don't know anything about the people on it!!!.
You just get a sense about people that from what little you learn from their posts they like I have spent their whole life involved or around hot rods.
So let's logically look at you post.OK??.You don't mean to be cruel or insulting ,but some old folks don't know crap.Hummm.Yepper there it is.........you did mean to be cruel and insulting.Didn't ya??.
Well let me school you some more.........these posts are opinions.Really no right or wrong.Especially on topic's such as this one.But when someone makes posts personal, that poster is really showing his true colors.....well really his butt. Not too smart.Sure seems to me your trying to boost your confidence level.
Now there are two things you can take to the grave.I advised you as to how the law reads if incident of a burn happens and if it is a child you dug a hole you'll never see the light of day.The other thing is be very sure I will not give a thought or lose any sleep over your mug slinging.Like I said..........it is just a matter of showing your true colors for all to see.Good Bye

I guess you have been beaten up pretty good on the safety issue, probably enough said on that, except perhaps that sometimes extra careful still isn't enough.
Enough said on that.
On the ol lady's diplomat with the 318 huffing through 72" sidepipes, they didn't seem restrictive, and weren't overly loud. Nice rumble at idle.
That car is long gone, concrete embankments are unforgiving. I kept the pipes though, and have one on my 76 nova with straight six, and it is very quiet.Last edited by firebird77clone; 06-01-2012 at 04:35 AM.

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
