    A section of sash chain....has enough sharp edges to knock any loose stuff off the tank... drop it in and shake it around, and easily removed when done.

    If the tank really cruddy inside it might be worth your time to take it to a radiator shop and have them clean it up. If there's a chance that any pinhole leaks have developed they can take care of those too.
