Media blasting, sometimes life can be good

Some of you know that I recently took in a stray ;) , attention starved :D 1969 Shelby fastback. Was concerned not only because of it's life in NYC as a daily driver, but because of all the test areas I found massive amounts of plastic filler. This week we bit the bullet and I had a good friend take it down to bare metal for me. Well, it got finished yesterday, last night got time to get it under some really good light and could not be more thrilled with the results. Turns out that the car is not as bad as I believed it to be. Very minor rust in the bottom corners of both doors, with two previous patches in the passenger quarter panel. One small dent on the passenger quarter, I would suspect is from parking the car on the streets of NY. Another small dent at the front mount for the drivers door handle (looks like someone might have kicked the handle, perhaps when the car was frozen shut :eek: to knock it loose). As they say, pictures tell the tale, so feel free to view the attached.....

As they say, sometimes life is good...In this case, I'd say so.

You are about the luckiest guy I know of!!!! I wouldn't count on having much good luck in the future though, think you used up your quota of good luck on the Shelby!!!! The car looks absolutely awesome, Bill, going to be an absolute pleasure putting this one together, huh????

Congrats, looks like your well on your way to having one drop dead gorgeous Shelby for me to test drive out at The Glen!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Now hand stripping the original stripes off the car, I hit virgin (still shiny) original paint. Playing around with the spray out card I did, I believe I'm pretty close to hitting the color on the head.

I would have thought that salt may have put it's mark on the lower quarters, but looks clear from here!!!!:cool:

Some type of adhesive, not brazed. Have not dug it all out yet as I want to get the car in etch prime before it rusts.

That is a beautiful old body,,as everyone else has said,,specially from that neck of the woods..One very lucky man..:cool: I can think of a few people down here who would love to give a home..:D

The '69 Shelby GT500 had a front end treatment that differs from the '69 Mustang, which may be confusing you.

i didn't know that i work in a mustang restoration shop down here in Bensalem Pennsylvania but we rarely ever see shelbys especially a rare piece like this

You do realize that you are surrounded by the highest concentration of vintage Shelbys and the highest concentration of SAAC (Shelby American Automobile Club) organizers on the east coast :D CLICK HERE . I'm less than an hour south, feel free to stop in and see it for yourself.

PS: What Mustang restoration shop do you work at?

Bill - that is amazing. I have, in Upstate NY, passed up possible project Mustangs of that vintage in the past as being unrecoverable from the vast amount of rust, especially torque boxes, around the rear window and firewall. Congratulations on a great find.

Now, I hope you keep us 'well pictured' of your future progress:D

On a side note, so I got rid of the old 40-80 grit sanding scratches late yesterday afternoon, masked it off, wiped it all down, drove it into the booth, wiped it all down again....Then went to the paint bench to mix my etch primer....No problem with the DE830 primer 1.5 gallons left on my mixing rack, but found two empty gallon containers of DER832 reducer :rolleyes: ...Called all around to the shops that I sometimes trade with in a pinch (usually they are the ones calling me as I stock two deep), am I the only one using etch primer these days? Will have to thank my employees on Monday morning as I start from scratch with the car at 10am (when the replacements are due in)

Probably - seems that many have gone to epoxy which is an etch primer as well according to SPI's Barry K. Heck I still have at least an unopened quart of VariPrime, maybe more

Wow Bill. That is going to be sweet! And a GT500 on top of that. You lucky bugger! :D

I think I used etching primer on Dustins Camino. The local shop talked me into it.
