New Gen Lt'er hot rodders
I think yrs ago companies hard sold the idea of Lt'er engines.A prime example is Ford with it's infamous "5.0".The new Gen hot rodders bought into this hook, line, and sinker.Truth is hard to beat. It's still only a 302 c.i.And my criticism of that is guys stroking them thinking they are the big dogs and still people when asked about a stroked SBC to 334 cringe.Aaaaa-it's a 5.0!!!.Hummm.
I think what happened here is dishonest on the car makers part and a shame they our younger berthed has bought into it.Has the 5.3's tech and the 6.0's had a impact??.They sure have. But the law of physics hasn't change. There ant no replacement for displacement.Good Bye

Well, you're right in your last statement. But as I see it.......everyone is entitled to their opinion.
There are those who love the 500+ in motors and others who like the small blocks. The best thing is .......we all have a choice of what we want to build.

LT's are a Chevy engine, predecessor to the LS series engines...
If you're talking about Ford's new modular engine, the 5.0 Coyote engine, they are a DOHC engine that put out 412 hp out of the crate in stock form and well over 600 with the Kenne Bell supercharger and still get 25 mpg on the highway with the OD transmission.
The stroker versions of the Chevy LS engine, like the LSX 454 do upwards of 500 hp out of the crate, and much more when tweaked and tuned. The LS 7 is 500 hp, the LS 9 is over 700hp and still more the 20 mpg.
Then there's the LS street rod engine that's even legal in California for Hot Rods.....
Heck yes they're going to have an impact!!!, most all improvements do!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Hey Dave-apply the same tech to a larger C.I.engine is kind of my point. For all too long these car makers have been playing a shell game with this.Good Bye

If I can get 600+ horse out of a 5L or 6L engine, why would I want anymore bigger cubes???? That's plenty to get hooked up on anything but a very well prepped race track. Certainly enough for the street!!!! Let's also not ignore the price of fuel.....At it's current price the difference in cost of driving a 25mpg Hot Rod with a 5L engine vs a 500 incher that gets 4 mpg is considerable!!!!!
Guess I don't understand the "shell game" deal---maybe going back to the days of every auto manufacturer having that Top Secret carb that makes every car get 30 mpg???? It's a matter of research and development, sometimes improvements are in tiny steps, sometimes they're giant leaps forward, nature of the business. I don't believe that it's a result of some sort of conspiracy perpetuated by the boys at Ford, GM, and Chrysler!!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Any body selling something needs to have there product stand out from the crowd. Ford used the 7 liter designation back in the 60's to call attention to the motor. Made someone feel special to say 7 liters, not 428 cid... Same with the 5.0 mustangs. "Everyone" is/was going metric anyway, so why not repeat the "magic" and make the car standout? Seems to have worked to! Didn't hurt that chevy "lost" some horsepower in the camaro!

Well...for this older HotRodder....there aint no sound like a BB Motor. you can tweak a SB to all the power you want and you will never get that sound......BUT........like said...you can get great horse power out of a SB wether its ford, chevy or dodge....without the weight and sound......I had a 460BBF for my truck all done up.....but with DOT laws I have to have fenders and the motor was too big and the front sump was going to be another issue for suspension clearance. So I sold it and the next motor I will build up will be a 351W SBF stroker and still get the HP that I would like to have......but I will lose that BB sound and will also lose about 250lbs of engine weight too. The 302SBF is a great popular motor...but for 450 HP+ they wont last as long as some bigger CID SB'sNever take life too serious.....You wont make it out alive

To clarify, which 5L are you talking about??? The old skinny block Windsor engine doesn't have much block strength, as others mentioned they crack easily....
However, the new DOHC 5L can do 450 horse quite easily plus get respectable fuel mileage and live quite well at that level
Just wanted to see if we are all talking the same engine....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

This is my plan exactly Gary.
496 BBC fuel injected using an LS1 ECM, sequentional injection, coil on plug, OD transmission and another OD gearvendors unit stuck on the back of that.
All big block production for GM has ended and the trend is to run all small blocks now.
They are very efficient and can create some great power and economy. If you can get 454 cubes from a small block, why would they need to build anymore big blocks?
I sure hope my little experiment gives me a bit of economy to go with the tremendous torque I plan on getting.Pugsy

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
