I use ron francis sockets.. they hold into the housing with a nut. works well.. I replaced the socket in my Rambler with an 1157 dual filliment and, the liscense plate light with a single filliment version

Just be real careful of some of the Chinese made sockets. They don't have much of any way to prevent a short, only a plastic ring that doesn't do a very good job. This is what I did to myself a couple years ago with some Vintique Pontiac tail lights while "testing" continuity with a car battery. (Yeah, I know, dumb)

LOL, Dave now I'm really upset!

I blew out my tail light fuse on the way to the Good Guys Del Mar show a few weeks back. I'm in a Denny's parking lot under a street light at 5AM on a Sunday morning trying to trace my short. Fortunately, I did not cut my finger like yours. But the cause was the same Vintique Pontiac tail lights. The wire terminals ground out against the side of the socket for a dead short. Make sure nothing in the trunk can push against the socket and wires.

John - you can for about 3-4 bucks get replacement sockets. I ended up getting a set of the LED version and used them instead, keeping the Vintiques for a trailer (oh yeah, didn't make myself clear - that's a burn through to rare red meat)
