I-scream

Not! It came out OK; I'm still not a very good painter but buying a nice gun definately helped. I didnt realize how bad I was fighting my old cheap gun intil I used a decent one. It's really hard to see where your last pass was when you're doing the second coat on a white paintjob. I ended up with a couple of dry streaks on the side; is there any way to fix these without repainting the whole side? I also did all the pieces for the dighouse and the side braces; they all came out acceptable. Hopefully I'll get the other side tomorrow and the front on Monday. Then it's time to take a paint break and start putting this thing back together.

hell that roof looks good from were i am sitting .yep white is fun i painted air plane wings like painting a big wall .you have to be on your game so you knew were you were putting wet on wet down and not have dry spots or to much paint:eek: i looked at angle to the gun when painting not strait on so you can watch the paint

Thanks, Pat. the roof sides look OK; it's just on top where it's not so great but the thing is so tall I'm not going to sweat it. I went out this morning to look how the first side dried and I was not happy. One bad run and more orange peel that a Sunkist. After I dropped three bills on a new gun, too. Of course it had to be a problem with the gun. So I got the box the gun came in to see how to send this piece of crap back and found an interesting piece of paper in the bottom of the box. It said "READ DIRECTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE USING." I figured it must be suggestions only, because why would I need to read directions when I know everything? :rolleyes:Let's see, air pressure at gun handle-wrong. Fan adjustment-wrong. Fine air adjustment-wrong. OK, I thought. I'll TRY and adjust it like they say and see what happens but I'm sure it wont be any better. You can guess what happened next. After also putting up a large halogen shop light so I could see properly, the other side came out about 10 times better than the first. Who would have thought? Tomorrow I'll do the front and think about what to do with the first side. Not sure if I need to completely do it over or if I can wet sand it out with some 1500. Any suggestions are more that welcome.

Joe, after looking at that big run near the back i decided to just do that side over. I sanded it down for a few hours with some 600 and shot it again when I did the front. I'm glad I did; it came out much better. I still have the doors, hood and roll up door to paint but I'm taking a break from the bodywork for a while. I'm going to work on getting it put back together and moving under it's own power. Here's where I started and what she looks like now; it's come a long way.

Thanks, Dave; I'm looking forward to seeing it, too. Here's a few shots from tonight; my wife is finishing her degree online so it's giving me some time to work while she's busy with her classes. I set the motor in place; right now it's just sitting on the mounts with a floorjack under the trans so it looks a little crooked. Hopefully I'll have it bolted down tight this weekend. I put a B&M Holeshot converter in it while I had the trans out. That should make for some good smoky burnout action.

455 Olds, rebuilt with stock rotating assembly, Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam and intake, headers, 750 Holley

It should move it along nicely; hard to believe this thing was powered by an AMC 232 straight six. When it was full of steel shelves and mail, I imagine it barely had enough power to get out of it's own way.

I started putting some of the side panels back on; Dave, you were right, those allen head stainless screws really make a difference. Also had to pull the motor back out; the header was hitting the frame on the passenger....ummm...drivers side so some more notching on the frame is in order.

Here's what my wife came up with for the graphics; I think it's pretty cool.

The graphics are great! The whole van is really coming together quite nicely, gonna be a fun ride!

Awesome graphics but can I please suggest adding a picture of the truck doing a wheelstand with a string attached to the little boys other hand. If that makes sense, like the kid towing a toy of the real truck, yeah, hope you can understand what I'm about.

Falcon,thats coming along nicely,looks good,wouldnt mind an I scream van like that in our neighborhood..I should suggest to a friend of ours to dump his new truck and build one similar,,,he is a rodder..It could catch on..:cool:

Dave, the whole "I-Scream" thing was your idea so I have to thank you for that. I think it's going to make it come out really cool. Whiplash, I tried a few times to find someone to draw something like that for me but couldn't get anyone to do it. If you know anyone, I'd be happy to give to stick their name on the side as the artist. Laminar, this thing would probably go over good in your neck of the woods. Most of your cars are right hand drive, arent they?

Yup,but because a lot of Kiwis arent as open minded as a lot of you guys,there would be a lot of nasty stuff flung about,cos its not a 32 .....
Myself,I think outside the square a bit more than most,and it would be an interesting promotional vehicle..AND,boy,it would skid well too..:D
In regards to an artist,check out the airbrush work in the Kumeu Festival thread I posted back about late Jan/early Feb...The guy who painted the Austin A40 gasser is more than capable of doing what you want,,its just a pity your van wont fit in an A4 size envelope...:DIncidentally,I think the LHD vehicles are slowly gaining a foothold down here,and the way some of our brothers drive,I am glad I have a left hook F100,and drive on the left side of the road...:cool:

There's some great stuff on that thread, Laminar. I'm the same way; I like the traditional stuff but what I really love building are the ones that nobody else has.
Making this big block fit has been tougher than I thought; you'd think with the size of this beast anything would fit with no problems but the framerails were a little narrow. I had to notch and re-box the rails on both sides plus cut off some header tubes and reweld them on at different angles. It's finally in there with just a few inches on each side to spare. I also put a little more together inside while I was waiting for the header coating to dry. I tried some stuff from Speedway; hope it works good. It's supposed to cure with the exhaust heat.

Falconvan,your project is outside the square,,its kool,which makes it appealing to me,,dare I say,not the prettiest toy I have seen,which also adds to the flavour...:D,but I bet it will get the looks,and with shoehorning that Olds engine in there,will blow a few minds as well...Its always good to shock a few people with a beast like that...:D And,yes,I can believe you had some fun fitting everything in there too..Its no kitset rod,is it ?:whacked:

I really go for the out of the box stuff, always wanted to be an artist but I have to use a compass and ruler to draw stick people so building cars became my canvas....Sure is great to see others breaking away from building the same old cars with the current "Trick of the Month Club" parts and ending up with a ride just like everybody else's!!!! All the crap about traditional rods and how things were done "back in the day" miss the real way Hot Rods were built then and should be built now... Take what ya got, scrounge up some goodies, buy what you can, fab what isn't made, and build the ride you want--Real Hot Rodding!!!!! I'd say you got it nailed down, Falcon!!!

Gee, thanks Dave! You've built some pretty darn cool stuff yourself from what I've seen so I really appreciate the kind words. It is a lot more fun to fab up your own parts and make something original. Not that I have anything against 32 Fords or other cars that are famous for being made into street rods; I hope I can afford to build a nice one someday.
I finally got the whole drivetrain bolted down with the headers on and it looks like it will all fit. I had to move the motormounts for the third time but now it finally looks like it's going to be good. I had the wheels off to drill a hole for the mounting bolts and while I was there I put on new shocks, went through the brakes, packed the bearings and greased the frontend. The big headache now is trying to get the #@%!!!!!! dipstick tube in the block! :CRY::CRY:There was no way to put it in first because I couldnt get the header past it. Enough for today; I'll try again tomorrow.

Falcon you sure have turned the I Scream around .

There are going to be a lot of thin kids in your neighborhood after trying to chase you down for a cone!:LOL:

That's no joke, Dave. I feel like I've been trying to get one part to work for two weeks; wait a minute, I have! After a couple nights in the garage after work, I finally got the header bolts all tight and some more stuff bolted on the engine. Luckily this thing had removable panels under the wheelwells so it made some of it a litlle easier. I had to pull the intake again because I saw what looked like the intake not covering one of the ports but it turned out to be nothing. Better safe than sorry. I still havent got that dipstick tube all the way down but for now I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going radiator shopping at the boneyard Monday so the front end may be on next week.

Thanks, guys. It feels like they go really slow when you get to this point. All that little stuff sure eats the clock. I had to build an alternator bracket to move it in closer to the engine. The stock one had it hanging way off to the side, plus with eliminating the power steering pump and A/C, I didnt need all those huge brackets anymore. I looked through my scrap bucket and found a Chevy top bracket along with a couple of straight pieces left over from an old garage door opener kit so here's what I came up with.

I also ditched the chrome water neck, it had a weird angle to the heater hose and it was kinking it. I got several other small things hooked up; try and hit it some more tomorrow.

Man, that thing is gonna be the most fun you could possibly have with your clothes on!!!!

I'm over 40, Dave. 90% of the fun I have IS with my clothes on! :LOL: Well, that's not totally true; momma can still get a little crazy when we have the house to ourselves. ;)
It's been a tough couple weeks at work so not too much done on the Iscream. I did start going through the wiring harness and getting rid of many years of crappy splices, toasted wires and bad switches. I think it'll come out OK even though it looks a little rough here. I also got my radiator from Summit and did a little tweaking on the decal design.

i like the heater in that big old van, I personally think this is one of the best multi functional hot rods I have seen, we like to go camping so a nice econoline is a prospective project for me , you could easily cam a bunch of camping supplies in the back. plus firewood, and have room in the truck to sleep if the weather gets really bad, you could put an rv hvac on the roof and have a party in the back just pull up and plug it in ... hmmm

Dont forget the hot tub, theatre room, and guest bedroom. I got room for it all in this baby!

I got the dash wiring roughed in, along with all new switches, hooking the wiper motor and control arms, and the center console put together. It doesnt look like much but there was a whole day here wiring, hooking up ductwork for the heat/defrost, and relocating things from its previous spot. I'm pulling out a lot of old splices as I go along and running new wire and will clean everything up once I'm sure it's all working.

I might be able to help you on the cherry bombs, Joe. Except they'll be under the truck instead of in the freezer. Come on down, NFTDAY, Springfields not too far from me. I think about 3-4 hours?
