    what came first . hard to say but sounds like the valve train was off you need a some pre load on the lifters if you were off bad things can happen .on alot of the non-adjustable rockers engines i make them adjustble so you can get the right pre load on the lifters if you deck the block cut heads new valves small base cam just bad valve work .worn out rockers or after market rocker arms all can come in to play . all this can throw the preload off and valve train geomerty can go south fast.sounds like you wipe the cam but you need to look in to it more to see if every thing is right.or someone over rev it bent some push rods and wipe the cam
