    Roller rocker valve springs

I had an oil leak at the valve cover. So, I removed the cover and found a small piece of the inner valve spring spiral laying in the head. Everything else looks OK.Will this be alright to drive until I can get it fixed? I have been driving it with no problems so far. Thanks

I'd drive it if I didn't have the time to replace the spring right away. Easy does it.

sure it is not a part of the steel band clip of a PC seal . if part of a inner i would not drive it till you put a new spring in you goinng to dig a spot in a spring cup or shim and send junk thru the engine

well if it start to eat a spring shim up a magnet will not help much the pistons skirts see the junk first as well as the inner will hook in to the valve guilde or retainer or loop the outer spring and get hanged and bend stuff up is it worth it??????????

I know just don't have time to have someone pull the head and replace it right now. Don't even know if I can find a replacement locally. Or what kind it is. With out a bunch of research.

you do not have to pull the head you can do it on the car done it may times you can do what you want you could be ok BUT i used many sets of springs and fix engines and build engines .i have seen what happens .i would not drive it .i am not going to say it will be ok when it is not it could cost you much more in the long run if that spring hang in the outer you can bend a valve and bust up $tuff

Agree with you Pat, I thought he meant drive it a short distance to work and back until he could change it over the weekend, not a road trip.

OK, how did you compress the spring? That is if I can find one by tomorrow.

If you have access to shop air, pressurize the cylinder using a spark plug hole adapter for the air line (NAPA). This will hold the valve in place on its seat while you remove the spring with a tool such as this....
    http://www.moroso.com/catalog/catego...?CatCode=27035

    Or this....

Or this, for shaft mounted rockers....

If you don't have shop air, toddle down to the local hardware of Walmart and pick up a bundle of clothesline rope. Bring the piston around to top dead center on the firing stroke (both valves closed), then back it up a little to bring the piston down in the bore and inch or so (go easy here or you'll loosen the bolt). Feed the rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and fill the cavity. Turn the crank clockwise to jam the rope up into the chamber and hold the valve on its seat. Have your buddy lean on the socket handle when you use the compressor.

OK, I took the valve cover off again. It's not the inner spring at all it is a coiled retainer between the springs. Looks as thought it keeps them seperated a little.

Are you talking about a flat-wound damper spring? That's the one that works to lessen harmonics in the round-wound springs. Do you have inner, outer and a damper?
