    Another 9" question

Of course I take things apart first and ask questions later, it only makes sense.

I have a 9" out of an '85 F150 that I need to replace the pinion seal. Yesterday a friend was over and mentioned there is a special way to do this. So I have the seal out and I'm trying to figure out if I have a preload shim or a crush sleeve, I figure the large washer is the shim??? I don't really want to completely disassemble the entire axle if I don't have to, I'm running out of time to get this done before we tear the house down and I have to start building that.

I've been searching and reading but I seem to get a lot of different answers so I thought I'd ask you guys that I trust your judgement.

    Thanks,
    Sean

If it is a solid tubing looking thingie about 3/8=7/16 long its a solid spacer

If it is a piece of thinner tube with a wrinkle in the middle its a crush sleeve

Pics of your parts would help

A solid spacer is easier to reinstall ---if a crush sleeve it will take many ft lb of torque to crush it and you will need a new one---Ford still uses the same 1957 crush sleeve to day in their 1 ton trucks----

Sean, I saved this site about 9" Ford rear ends for future reference, hopefully it will help you too.

If it is a 9" Ford it will have a crush sleeve. It is between the two bearings.
Pull the front bearing out and you should see it on the pinion shaft.
Not one shred of evidence supports the notion that life is serious.

Great reference Mike! I've saved it as a favorite as well for future reference!

Thanks guys, I finally decided to save that link you gave me Mike.

I was hoping to not have to rip it all apart but I guess I might have to.

I have not yet done it but I am going to do my 9 inch also. I went on ebay and got a CD that walks you through the rebuild process and I watched it. It is very good. I know now I will have no problems putting it back together correctly.

I also took it apart first, it only makes sense.

It was $20 or something. Well worth it.
