I'd put a piec of 1" wide 20 ga. over the split, same thing I'm doing on the rear window openings where the window seated in on the Bronco II... It will add a bit of strength....that and the fact that I just don't like doing butt welds on sheet metal.... On the Bronco II, by losing the lip I even managed to drop a bit of weight as well as strengthen it.... Best of both worlds. Granted, not a significant weight loss but if you can't find anymore places to shed 100 pounds, then find 100 places to lose a pound!!!!!!
