No, you won't get any negative stuff on this forum...........the people on here are some of the nicest folks you will ever run into. Post us some pictures so we have a better idea of what you are dealing with.

As the others said, our condolences to you on the loss of your Father in Law, and we understand how your Wife must be feeling about now.

What kind of car is it BTW??

    Don

Welcome to CHR! Pictures always help to tell the story and to solicit more exacting solutions. So some pictures of your rust problem may get you some excellent recommendations from people who have seen just about every kind of rust and restoration problem.

Sorry to hear of your father in law's passing. Any family death can be a tragic event. Many here have experienced similar events and sympathize....never criticize.

Welcome and my condolences as well. I'm working on a similar project. I find that a 3m abrasive disc that mounts to a drill does a nice job of taking off the rough rust, and then hitting it with a rust converter, like Mar-hyde one step. After that , a quick light coat of etch primer, followed by primer( I use epoxy primer as I go, because it seals the metal so I don't have to worry about moisture getting in there and starting rust back up again. If your going to paint relative soon, your finish coat, then just use a primer recogmended by your local auto paint store that will work with whatever final finish your putting on. There are a lot of good old threads on here that cover many different ways to solving this issue. Good luck and post some photos as you go these guys are a wealth of usefull info!
