Chevy engine ID
I tried looking this up. It was said to be a 327. Casting # 3892657 which indicates (apparently) a 67 engine with a 4 inch bore since it could have been a 302, 327 or 350.
The stamped # suffix is HC which would indicate it is either a 1965 powerglide 327 in a full sized car or a 1969 M/T 350 AFX (not sure what AFX is)
I checked a couple different sites and the only variation I got was on the 67 327 and that was 66-67.
So what do you look for when the casting # and suffix don't jive?
Is 67 all large journal? 66?
I am mostly only interesting in this greasy hulk if it's a small journal, which it probably isn't. It was pulled from a 70s 4x4 so the bolt ons probably aren't original. Help please?

According to Mortec, here is what they say:
3892657....350.....67....2...Camaro (2 meaning two bolt main)
Not sure what the other codes mean, but maybe one of our engine experts will know.

MSA-1 book says
3892657 Casting
1967 302 small journal
1966-67 327 210,275,300,325,350 hp car/truck
1967 350 295 hp
The letter HC stamping indicates an Impala powerglide with a single 4bbl carb (if this is the stamping on the front engine pad in front of the passenger side head)
With the combination of the suffix and the casting number, you can tell what it is....suffix stampings got reused, in this case an HC could be a big main or a small main block

Mike, that's all the information I already had but the HC was a 65 or a 69 according to the 2 different sites I checked and not a 66 or 67 that the casting number indicated, that's the part I was trying to make sense of, you just basically repeated what I already said.

Probably only way to know is drop the pan and see what journals you have. Sometimes these numbers don't relate to what the engine actually is, and over the years people get their paws in there and change stuff too.

Yeah Don, I reckon so. I haven't messed with chevys much for a long time but I always did like those small journal engines so I thought I would cabbage this one if it was.

If you read my post again, I said that the HC stamping does not necessarily identify it.....but the combination of the HC plus the casting number does. The casting number 3892657 is not a 1969 casting number....such was only used in 66-67 according to MSA-1. The similar 68-69 casting number was 3892659 for a 327.
But then, pulling the pan is soooo easy
