All Ford gauges up to the 80's sometime were 6 volt except for 1956. Ford used a voltage reducer from 1957 on, usually mounted on the back of the instrument cluster.

I have heard that the 6 volt gauges will take 12 volts without any problems. I used one of the Ford voltage reducers in my 54.
