    header refinishing

just picked up a set of used chrome headers and side pipes for my vette. the pipes and tubes are solid but have surface rust , blueing and the side tubes are rusted to the collector . how hot can i get the chrome tubes with a torch before i ruin the chrome ? can i sand blast the chrome off and paint them ? can i paint over the chrome ? should i just header wrap the whole pipe and headers ? any tips and options appreciated. thanks mike

It sounds to me like you need to buy some new headers.

Most places frown on coating already used products, they will either do it with no warranty or they will not touch them.........most have found it does not last too well on used items .....I think there is one coating place that specializes in coated previously heat cycled items, but to strip the old and coat it again is pretty close to new price ,unless you have some exotic set up.

Don't wrap them, they will rust out in no time.
Jet coatings claims they can do rusted headers with no problem. I don't know of anyone that has done it! but it will be shiney aluminum, not chrome.

I have aluminumized headers on my ACVW and they look nice, but have a soft feel to them, been on for 4-5 yrs and still look nice.

Here's a pic of them new.
