    What to do??

     



    Merry Christmas everyone,

    I have just placed a new Carb in my 87 TA, 305, I am sure that its not tuned correctly. Got it from a buddy. Its an Edelbrock # 1406, I got the torker II intake, and a 1" spacer. Will improper settings on the carb cause overheating. Also, any info on vacuums, carb settings would help me a bunch.

    Guys, I don't have a clue, I got the car running, but it has minmal power and overheats. I also think theres a hole in the exhaust. Im kinda embarrased to ask but, what kinda engine damage can you cause if you install spark plug wires in the reverse order on your distributor and try to start it.

    TI, thanx for the help, I will fill you in on the particulars. I got the TA from a friend who had to leave the island and had no time to finish the project, or barely even start it. He said it if i came to get it I could have it for free, so I did. All he had done was remove the radiator, Carb, dist, Valve covers, and Manifold. He gave me all these parts separately except the Carb, and he also gave me the 350 that he had intended on putting in it, complete with the torker II intake, and an HEI dist. Now when I came along, this eyesore had already been sitting for a little more than a year baking in the Hawaiian sun. What once was red was now a nice pink. After a few hours of elbow grease and rubbing compound, I got it looking ten times better, all except for the rust/fire hole in the hood which can easily be replaced. Anyway, I am in the Military out here, and I have access to plenty of Fix it yourself auto garages and junkyards who always have plenty of 3rd gen firebird or camaro's. I am pretty handy, but I may not have the patience I thought I did. I tore down the 350 simply to learn how the basic engine works and what it looks like inside, and to determine the condition of all the components. Before that, the most technical work I had ever done was install a 3 inch lift on my cherokee.

    The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

    Sounds like you may have just installed the intake and distributer too. I suggest that you double check your ignition timing and make sure that the distributer is indexed correctly. Retarded timing can cause overheating, even to the point of glowing red exhaust manifold/headers. Also since you mention that it has been sitting for sometime, make sure that the cooling passages in both the engine and radiator are clear and that the radiator hoses are in good shape. You mention you are in the military, take it by the auto hobby shop at the base, there is almost always one of the old retired GI mechanics around there that has seen just about everything and will be able to help you sort it out.

    Have fun with your project, sure sounds like the price is right!
