It doesn't matter how you do the gears, you will always be able to punch it!
low gears have their advantages, but so do high gears.
I'm not so worried about coming off the line.. I like to keep the end destination in mind. Right now my 78 bird has 2.41 ( open ) rear which I recently dropped in to replace the 2.56 ( clutch-type limited slip ) rear. I am much happier with the open rear end as the car is a daily driver, and the limited slip was wearing out the rear tires unevenly ( cone-ing them to the inside ). With gear ratio like that is is a hoot to drop it back into first at 40-55 MPH and jump a car length on the punk rice driver before he realizes what has happened ! I'll leave it in first till 60-70 and by the time I'm ready to shift into third it's a felony offense!.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
