i have a 82 f-250 and it was purchased from CSX railroad and its rear end was intended for towing purposes. it has a 351w in it and id like to take advantage of it. any ideas for a new rear end?

Would be helpful to know whether it's a 9 incher or a Dana differential, like a Dana 60 series. It can be a usable peice or some hard effort to make it work with shortening axles and housings and gear swaps and such. Tell us more if you can.
What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

What ratio - if it's 4.10, I'd probably just leave it, especially if you have the 16"/16.5" wheels and tall tires. If in the 4.30/5.13 - best look for something in a junkyard as these are a H-D Dana full floaters, with 8 lug wheels and not cheap to retrofit new gears.

I had a 82 F250 with a 351\C-6 and it had 3.50 gears and it did not do too bad on gas, even though its a 3/4 ton it might not have a full floating rearend as mine did not. They made them with a C clip type rear along with the full floating type and being from a railroad it probably has the full floating with steep gears. Jeff

Some were what they called a "7700" F250 and were not much more then an F150 with some HD components. Good for a lot more then an F150 for capacity but not up to a "real" F250 with full floater and HD frame, etc. Some, depending on the year, had 7 lug wheels just to make life interesting.
