Power or manual steering? In either case, I would be suspect of the front end alignment. Not enough caster will make the car squirrely at speed....

yup caster is a major play on that car.... is it manual or powersteering, 6 or 8cyl? if its a 6cyl car with an 8 in it also, it'll make the steering squirley.... theres a lot of parts different in the steering components between the two

I believe that vintage power steering still used the old slave cylinder on the steering linkage??? They never were very good, sometimes the adjuster on the box can be tightened, check a Chilton's manual for the adjustment procedure to make sure you do it correctly... If the box is tight and the caster and the rest of the front end components and alignment specs are in order about the only thing left to do is adapt a later model power steering box onto the car, or maybe one of the rack and pinion conversion kits for it. I do know the old Mustangs with power steering were a bit squirrely, another option would be too do away with the power steering and run manual steering, they still turn fine and probably the car won't do enough parallel parking to really need the power steering anyhow.... Let us know what you discover!!!!

there is an adjuster on your slave cylinder you can adjust that, as well as put a larger pulley on your power steering pump, the annoying part with the pulley is find one with the right offset so you dont throw belts..... another trick is to do the shelby upper control arm mod, which will widen your stance in the front by about an inch and also give you a little better travel in your suspension, which is why shelby cars had a tighter pitman arm to make the steering a little more responsive.... or you can remove your power steering completely and add the shelby pitman arm which will make your gear box able to work like a manual steering gear box without being way too many turns.... the shelby pitman arms run about $150-$250
