Been looking in the Eastwood book again.... Anyone have or seen one of these in use???? English Wheel and Planishing Hammer kit.
Seen the english wheel used, for making fenders and cycle gas tanks, cool tool.
haven't actually seen them in use, but I know of the tools.
The Eastwoods' planishing hammer/ english wheel combo is supposed to have some some awards so they must be pretty good.
Thing about the english wheel, is it needs a lot of practice to get it right.
Planishing hammer is about the same, but it goes faster ( and is louder )
if ya got the $$, the time, and the patience, I say go for it.
your biggest question is: to buy the stand or make it yourself.
Think I'll buy the wheel and planishing hammer pieces and make my own stands. I'd like a little deeper throat to work some wider pieces....
looks interesting,I might just go to their site and check it out. Hank

I think the statute of limitations has run out(on most of it anyway)
Before he died, Roy on Boyd Coddington used them.

i have both a english wheel and a planish hammer . i use my planish hammer 10x more than the wheel . the wheel is good for making blood shoot out of the ends of your fingers !
 Good one Kenny.I will second the planishing hammer. Its really a give and take on both. The English wheel will smash the S%*T out of the fingers. But the planisher hammer will make you deaf. So pick your poison. Band aids or Advil.
Tim
tim , when did you get here ? good to see you over here .
I've been hanging around for a while. I really like the street rods. always have aways will.

I'll second the motion from kennyd...........I utilize a Northridge planishing hammer way more than I'd ever use the wheel.
The one + for the wheel is it can make larger panels quicker than the hammer could ever.
If you doing smaller repairs & not actually building qrtr. panels, roofs, door skins, etc. then the hammer is the way to go.
Just a note though........buy the best planishing hammer your wallet will allow. There is a lot of junk units on the market.
Prices range from almost reasonable to down right out of sight!

Thanx for the input guys... Going to do some more shopping and probably end up buying some really good components and building the rest.
Tech, thanks for the links!!! That is some really first rate equipment!!!!! Better start saving my pennies, huh?????
Dave, I have a couple of vintage planishing hammers that may give you some ideas on how you can improve on the ones for sale. The "head" comes off and installs into different "bodies". These are hand held but the body could be floor mounted if you made up a stand. I plan on making a floor mount for mine, and I HIGHLY recommend doing the same. With the floor mount you make a foot pedal operation. Holding the handle down with one hand while you move the metal with the other is a total joke. If you are using it as a hane held and your moving the tool over the fender or what ever that is mounted on the car, that is a super neat tool to have. But if the part is small and you have to do it with one hand while activating the one off with the other on a bench mount, that SUCKS.

PS, you don't want to know how I fell into both of these tools (about 10 years apart from one an other) it will make you sick. Basically I have 25 bucks invested in both!

If you decide you want your money back, let me know!!!!!
Yeah, I lucked out big time. I don't think I would ever spring for what they go for normally. I will try to get a picture of the floor mounted one for you. I took a picture of it at a swap meet one time and have it on the wall in the garage. :)
