Question on 3.0 hp Mini high torqe starter

I have a new 3.0 hp high torque starter for a sb chevy that I purchased on ebay and I was wondering if any has had any experienced any problems that I'm coming accross. When I turn the engine over the starter will drag sometimes and other times it will turn right over. The battery hase a full charge and all connectins are good. The battery has 910ca and 720 cca, is it possible the starter has bad spots in the windings ? Let me add the motor is a new rebuild and I have rechecked to make sure I do not have the distribuor out 180. can anyone give me some suggestions ?

if it drags after it gets hot, then it could be your base timing. if it does it cold or hot sounds like the starter or bat. when does it drag?

chech your bat. and see what your alt. out put is. your bat should have around 13 volts in it. if the bat is up, then you need to check the starter draw, and its pulls below 9 volts then you may have a bad starter.

How can I check to see if the starter draw is below 9 volts. I have never done this ?

you really need to go to auto zone or some place like that and let them check it. be sure they know what they're talking about though. if you have a volt meter, then hook it up and see that your starting volts is, should be 13 volts, if its not you need to charge your bat. then when you start your car, you watch the meter, and see how far the starter pulls the bat. down. to 9 volts is ok, after that you have a problem. the bat. has to be fully charged before you do this. if your bat. is not fully charged you need to find out why. use the same meter to check your alt. out put.

I checked the battery and had 12.89 volts, checked the starter draw, checked ok, 10.21 volts rechecked the timing and found that when I checked my timing, that the timing advance knob was advanced. I turned it to 0 and retimed, Turns over perfectly now. I'm going to get a timing light without the advance knob. Thanks for the help.
