    Brake Lights

I am looking for information I once saw on a custom car/truck show or maybe it was a magazine. Anyway, they had a LED third brake light assembly that they mounted flush with the body but actually put a coat or two of paint over it so that when the light was off, you saw absolutely nothing, but with it on it would shine through the paint. I have searched on here as well as google for hours and while I feel I am inputing the most probable search terms, I am still coming back with nothing.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Pete

Sorry, can not offer any help, but sounds near impossible? Maybe clear coat, but I find hard to believe light would shine thru couple of coats of color paint.

you have to have a translucent paint ( the top coat of a candy would work ) for it to work, I'v seen it done also, I just don't know of any suppliers.

not quite what i was going for denny. this is flush with the body of the car and is sanded smooth. then you paint your car (ideally candy would be the best) and then you clear over it. i have seen it before, it was done on the third brake light on a c/k chevy truck.

Maybe just some lexan or plexiglass, molded into the body????

At the rod shop I used to work at we installed what I think you're talking about on a 30's ford pu. it was a clear plexitype lens that you could mold to the contour you want. it was about 1/8" with a row of LED's behind it. once we cut the slot and mounted it it was sanded to match the style line and removed for polishing. after the pu was painted and the lens reinstalled, the plexi took the color of the truck and blended right in until you hit the brakes. It works better on solids than metallics, but will give the illusion of a painted lens. does that sound like what you're looking for?
