283 in a 91 nissan

hello my name is jeff and im building a 91 nissan for my weekend toy we have done a lot of work to the truck as for body and stuff it down to about 2100 lbs. im wanting a fater motor the bone stock 150 hp 4 banger ran 11.90 when the truck was still 2900 lbs and im looking to go faster and i know im going to need a motor that has a lot of rpm power up top so i fount a 283 for 20.00 im looking to build it what all should i do to the motor to get it to go faster

so far all i did was clean and cut the crank .10/.10 the motor will need to be bored how far should i go

i know ill need small heads so im looking at maybe some 305 heads

as for the cam, intake and carb im not sure i would like to run 100 shot on it seens it such a high rev motor i thank it would work good

but im open to any ideal to make the motor faster

11.90 in the 1/8 isn't bad for a stock 4 banger.:D :D :D :D

well it had a muffer and timeing messted with and all the smog pulled

and as far as money i have about 400 rite now and in to weeks ill have 200 more then about a 100 evey two weeks this will not be a over nite thang lol

as for transmissions i want a stick shift as long as it is hydro and not cabel cluch seens it will make it eazyer seens the truck is 5 speed hydro not cabel 4 speed or a 5 speed

o ye the motor will clean up if i go 30 over on th bore

ok i also fount a nother 283 block im my grandads building its is bored like .60 over but evey one is tellin me to bore it to 4.00 is this safe its like .125 over i was like it dont sound safe but a lot of the old guys arounf here say the old 283 blocks like 68 and older was made with really thick walls so you could bore them .125 over and be good is this true

well considering 1967 was the last year fo the 283 there is no 68 and later blocks. yes you can bore then .125 the best blocks are 61-62 and up. i have a 64 283 in my car and its bored .125 and dosnt run hot or anything goofy. and a few mid 60's ones at home ready to be punched .125

It does not sound safe because it is not.
If GM wanted the 283 to 4.0 they would have used that block.
Instead they came out with the 327 that has the 4.0 bore.

Take the block to a machine shop and have the guys sonic check the cylinder walls for thickness. If you can bore it and still have a wall thickness of 0.135", then go for it.

chevy didnt intend to put v8's in novas at 1st either but other people did it alot. :D besides chevy never intedned for 383's to come around they built one now but you get what i am saying. and if i had 50 grand falling out of my ass id have better parts but i dont so i use what i can and it just happens i like what i use :LOL:

Chevy never intended to build a .125 over 283 bore that is why they brought out a whole new block and engine combo.
You all know as a the 327 4.0 bore x 3.25 stroke.
If you did have 50 k falling out of your a-- then I would think about seeing a proctolgist.:whacked: :whacked: :LOL:

The high winding skinny blocks are fun, but I still prefer the big torque numbers coming in at a lower RPM that you get from a long armed stroker engine. Small block chebbies and all the other engines will generally live a lot longer with components designed to build torque at a lower RPM.

Whatever engine combination you choose, it is going to take some suspension work to get the rear end hooked up and not just blow the tires off everytime you stab the throttle. Lots more involved in going fast then just having big horsepower and torque numbers. But hey, I'm a chassis guy, what did you expect to hear??????:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

And yes, there is a reason I don't build them now.
Sonic test enough blocks,build many engines and you will soon see how important wall thickness can be.
Every engine has to a good foundation.
The engine is only as strong as it's weakest link.

"301" was the flavour of the week back in the '60's when there were tons of 283 blocks free for the taking and boring was like six bucks a hole. We used to go through a few before we found one that'd work. But when it did work, they were screamers! Can't see the reasoning behind doing that now, though. Just find a good 4" bore block and go from there.
283's can go to 292 with no problem, though. Or .060 overbore, that's about 290 cubes with stock GM pistons.

We were stuck running them many years ago when 302 was the cubic inch limit at some of the tracks we ran. Eventually they raised the cubic inch limit to 310, 330, then finally 355 and 360. What a relief when we could finally run engines that would live longer and produce more power at a lower RPM...

I ran a little injected 301 in a Bantam altered, and it was always dicey if it was going to stay together or not. Yeah, it wound up like a 2 stroke, but life expectancy was iffy.

With the engines out there today, it just doesn't make sense to go with the smaller engine. Free cubes are a good thing.

Yes, that was one of many points I was trying to make.
I go round and round with this kid that works for me.
The kid wants to bore his 5.0 Ford roller block to .060 over.
Then he wants to put in this $1,300 rotating assembly in it.
I keep telling him if he wants more cubes build a 408 instead with the 351 windsor block.

some people get it. some people dont. i aint gonna continue to fight with ya. i use 283's for a few reasons, one in my expierience's they last a long time 8 years is good for a motor that is being ran to death every weekend, 2, ive gotten the last 4 of them for free! i got 2 from some guy i met on here. one from my friend craig and the one in my nova my dad got it for free from some guy for doing a tow for him. <dad used to run a towing company> so basically free, cheap horsepower IMHO.

The only advantage I might have on some of them is I use a dyno,flow-bench and a race track for all my R&D.

somebody said 283 was not meant to go .125 overbore when infact it was in some cases as it was built on the sime line as the 327....inside these 283s there are even clearances for the larger stroke crank. if you really want a high reving engine why not build a 377 and get the advantage of more cubes to make more torque.

I was that somebody.
The 283 came out in 1957.
The 327 came out in 1962.
If the 327 was built on the same line it was not until 1962,five years later after the 283 came out.

ive alway had good luck with my 22r toyota motors, stomped on alot of big bad v8s... or you could build a nice 90s supra twin turbo 6.. you could get about 800 street driven horses out of em and still get 20 miles to the galon... so much for the ford noise, i want to see ya drive that hemi every day....
