    Unhappy Wheel race removal?

     



    Hey guys i was just wondering if anybody could give me some tips on removing wheel races, and is there a proper way you have to remove them? All the suggestions would really help.

    Assuming you're talking about bearing races such as in your front hubs, and you've got the hubs off the car. There should be a small amount of the races base sticking past the hole in the hub from the back side of the race (inner race from the front of the hub, outer race from the back of the hub). With a drift punch and hammer just knock it out, moving around the race with each strike to "walk" it out of the hole. If you don't have a proper driver tool to install the new race, save the old one to use as a "make do" driver. Set the wide edge of the old race on the face of the new one, and with the help of a piece of 2x4 drive in the new one, the wide edge helps keep from damaging the new race.

    It also helps to grind the outer circumference of the old race a little bit for some applications. That keeps it from getting stuck while driving in the new race. At least that worked for me on MII races.

    Oh - and wear safety glasses. Those races are hardened steel.
