    Wireing issue

In my 1968 chevy pick up truck. WhenI took mt starter out. I cut the wires on the fire wall rather than trying to put the back on at the stater. However, when I peal back the rubber to reconnect the wires. I seen that there we two yellow wire. One of those wires gos to the distriter and I think the other comes from the swicth. Or to swicth. My thinking is this. with the battey conected up, one of those wires will be hot. The other will not. The one thats not hot will go to the disrbiter. And the hot wire gos to the swicth. The one that gos to the dis. will become hot when key is on. Does that sound right?

Nope, here is how it is wired. When you look directly at the solenoid you will see 3 studs. One fat one in the middle and a skinny stud on each side.

The center fat one is obviously for your battery cable. The skinny one to the right of the fat one is the stud that kicks the starter to work. Hook up the wire that goes to the ignition switch there.

The other stud takes the wire that goes to your coil. It provides a full 12 volts to the coil ONLY WHILE YOU ARE CRANKING, to give the coil a full shot to get the car started easier.

Oh, By the way. I don,t remember where it was talked about at. But guys were saying that cars with a point type distrbiter were only getting 6 volts. And that a HEI dis. needed 12 volts. I have replace the point dis. in my truck with the HEI dis. I have trace the wires to the starter and have inspected the other wires up under the hood. I have found no resistors. And ofcourse have a 12 volt battery and a 12 volt system. If there is indeed only 6 volts going to my dis. How would I correct that issue. On my dis, the coil is mouted on top of the dis.

Denny, Thanks for you answer. I have only the one wire comming from the starter. It conects to the HEI coil that is mounted right on top of the HEI Dis. I took off the oil coil when I change from pionts to HEI. The HEI dis. and the top mounted coil are made as one unit. I will look for the old coil and check out what you are saying, Thanks, John.

Oh, by the way. Denny, The wire you are talking about. Is not there anymore. It is only the one wire comming from the starter. Would that mean that the way inwhich my HEI dis. is made. With the coil as part of it. That that would take care of that issue? Thanks, John.

Denny, The wire I have connected to the dis. now. Is the same one that was connected to the old coil on the + side. The wire that was conected to the - side of the old coil and which went from the coil to the dis. No longer is there. Thanks, John

thats ok john if you have 12 volts. check the voltage(wire going to the dist.) and see what you have, and if its not 12 volts you need to replace that wire with a 12 volt wire thats hot all the time except when the key is off. you can find the wire at the ign. sw. plug on the steering col.
