a first gen SBC is a first gen SBC, the starter from a 383 stroker will work on the smallest cubed SBC the 262. you say you have tried everything, but you didnt mention what you have tried exactly. maybe shimming it would fix it? there is a tolerance check you are supposed to do when replacing starters, though most are complacent and just throw a new one on.
