Use 1/8" mild steel (#10 ga.) hot rolled plate. Cold rolled gives absolutely no advantage for what you are doing. The superior surface finish on cold rolled is used for jig and fixture making in machine shops, but you will be cutting, burning, and grinding on these plates to the point where a superior surface finish will be meaningless.-----Hot-rolled plate is "friendlier" for welding also.Old guy hot rodder
