use a recip saw with variable speed, and run it slow. It also helps to spray the blade with WD 40 while cutting. If the blade is smoking the oil, then you're getting it too hot.
I had to cut through a 1" stainless steel flange once, about 6" long. It took six blades and a can of WD. ( had a helper spray while I cut ) but the job got done..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
