    Rearend Question?

I found a rearend out of a 93 ford Explorer but the gear ratio is 3.08. I'm not realy looking to set the road on fire, but if I decide to stick my foot in it I don't want ot limited either so if you would give me your imput.

This is going in a 39 Chevy

    Thanks Hartside

Gee, it kinda depends upon your rear tire height and transmission ratios.

For instance, a 700R or 4L40 has a 3.11 first gear but the Turbo 350 has a 2.52 first gear. The Overdrive 700R/4L60 has a top gear of 0.70 while the TH350 is 1.0

If you ran a fairly short tire, the 3.08 ring and pinion would work. I have a 700R4 with 4.56 rear and 37" tall tires and it isnt enough to hurt your neck.

Do a little math and see how your combo compares to an equivalent weight car.... compare with a similar engine and you will get an idea of the performance to expect.

I tend to agree with robot, do the math and see what you come up with as far as what your combination will produce, engine power and such. Then I would compare that to what the power output was in the vehicle you are taking it from. What rear is it, the 8.8?

I bet you will find it to be just fine for your 39. I had the same set up in my 40 sedan with satisfactory results. Just a fun to drive street rod. Joe

I am running a set of 3.08:1 gears in the roadster pickup rearend, with turbo350 automatic and stock chev 305 with 4 barrel. My rear tires are 31" diameter. This car is a fun drive around town, and great at highway speeds---but----the roadster pickup is a light little truck, and this rearend gearing definitely does not give the "snap" that you associate with something that looks this much like a hotrod. If I had it to do over, I would look for as set of 3.55:1 gears. Your 39 chev will weigh half as much again as my roadster pickup, so you certainly won't be impressed with a set of 3.08"s.

Dont think of the 3.08 gear as a hinderance.....think of it as an excuse to go to a big block 502 Chevy so you have starting torque AND have the power to pull on the highway!!!! Then, you can smile because you have a 502 with an ECONOMY rear ratio!!
