If the starter has been on the car for any length of time I would think the brushes would be pretty well worn down and in need of replacing.
I sem to remember that the length of the positive cable is fairly long and if it's less than 6 guage or old, it will drop too much voltage under hot load conditions. Be sure to check the attatchnent of the ground cable, clean and tight.Ken Thomas
