just bought a 56 bel air motor is 265 bored out to a 283. some times car will start up right away but sometimes i have to spray into the carb for it to start.. some one said i may need a new or high performance fuelpump. is that ture also when i try to start it sometimes seems like has a hard time turning over . alternator is battery are brand new.. any advise glady taken..
if it runs ok after you get it running its probably not the fuel pump, but it could be leaking down after it sat over night, but normally the car will start and cut off if its the fuel pump leaking down.. . when it want start look over into the carb. and pump the accl. and see if fuel squrits into the intake , if it dont sounds like the carb is leaking down or the accl. pump is bad.. if you have a Q-JETS, they are bad about that.Quote:

sounds like the timing might be to hi on the hard starting.
The advance weights under the rotor could be sticking, altering the timing sometimes.

Your post got my interest. I've never messed with a Chevy before, but how can you bore a 265 to a 283? Is it bore and stroke or...? I'm only familiar with Ford mods..., I've lived a sheltered life :) Most big increases in ci mods involve stroke changes.
To be honost with you i have no idea my self .. how he did that but from what he told me that was teh max bore he can do on that motor size..one of the other guys here should be able to answer that for us.. but ,man this car runs great except for damn starting problem ... he drove from portland oregan to me in los angles to deliver the car...
When you say it dosen't turn over some times, is it when the motor is hot or cold? If its when its hot the starter may be heat soaked. if its when its cold, check your battery cables and grounds to block and frame.

well it turns over r eally slow almost as if it has no power , but i checked batt and alternator are fine..both when hot or cold has a hard time . its like starts up real slow liek not catching or soemthing.. but when u spray into the carb it starts up.. it sliekits not cranking fast enough..
lots of replies to this one, hot or cold check timing,remembering how far above sea level you are,this bit me in the butt once
if cables and such are tight and starter drags when hot suspect heat soak or starter shims (starter too tight)
If the starter has been on the car for any length of time I would think the brushes would be pretty well worn down and in need of replacing.
I sem to remember that the length of the positive cable is fairly long and if it's less than 6 guage or old, it will drop too much voltage under hot load conditions. Be sure to check the attatchnent of the ground cable, clean and tight.
thanks guys for all the help , i changed the changed the battery fuel filter checked the starter its fine.. so ima just change the damn motor.. i think i need more speed.. any one know any sugestions here in cali like la area..
265 to 283 could be feasable u can bore a 283 .155 and it'll make 305ci or .125 and get 301-302......scooter ...............but on a 265 yowza

283...3 7/8" x 3"
Bore the 265 out 0.125" and you're there.
