Rack questions
Has anyone had particularly good or bad luck with any racks out there? Anybody try going to the local parts house and ordering a rack from them as opposed to a Mustang II or something like it coming from a 'Street Rod' vendor?

I've had a TRW rebuild (manual steering) in my pickup for years and have had no problems. 10 years ago the street rod outfits were just starting to sell new units, so my choices were limited at the time. If looks are critical, mine does have the three mounting bosses, and I only use 2, but you have to get on your hands and knees to see it. Not a problem for me.

Im not concerned about appearance-just function. Did you order by a specific application or just look through a bunch to find the overall length you wanted? Thanks for the input....

I have a Mustang II front end kit in my truck, so I ordered a 1974 to 1978 Mustang II steering rack. Pinto's are the same thing, I think the years span a little longer. The crossmember in the kit came with pre-drilled holes to mount the rack. If you're putting in a Heidt's, Fatman etc. Mustang II crossmember kit, then the stock rack will work fine. If you are fabbing something on your own, I don't know what to tell you. The Mustang II kits work great under a truck like my '51, because the track is almost the exact width as the stock axle. It tucks the tires inboard like the stock axle and not outboard against the fenders like a Camaro or Nova clip does.

I've had great luck with flaming river. I've probably installed 15 or so with no major problems. They run about $250.
Dammit, another good ol boy gone. Condolence to the family. RIP Mike
